John

My name is Tonya Tucker and I am a medical social worker in the city of Newark.

When I joined the Dream.Org Fellowship, my focus was housing justice.

I had spent years helping people affected by the prison system find a safe, dignified place to live.

But what I didn’t realize was how connected our environment is to everything I was fighting for.

In Newark, we’re losing our green spaces.

The trees, the parks, the clean air — all the things that help us breathe — are disappearing.

Meanwhile, highways, ports, and pollution flood our neighborhoods, and our children are paying the price.

John, I’ve seen it firsthand: kids missing school because of asthma and families going to the emergency room without understanding what’s happening. The families in my community are living in spaces that make them sick.

I didn’t know the full impact of the environment on my community — until Dream.Org showed me how to connect the dots.

I’m passionate about building solutions.

I want to see more green spaces, clean energy, and green jobs in Newark. Jobs that lift up my community while cleaning up our environment.

Dream.Org gave me the tools to tell my story — and fight for change. But I can’t do this alone.
