Compare & Contrast: Republicans Fearmonger While Democrats Fight for You in Bill Filing
John,
While the period for filing bills in the upcoming 60th Regular Legislative Session has only just begun, the priorities of Republicans and Democrats could not be further apart. Republicans are writing bills to fearmonger and rile up their base. At the same time, Democrats remain laser focused on building a better Oklahoma.
Legislators will have until mid-January to file legislation to change State Law. Representative Jim Olsen (R-Roland) has looked at the challenges facing our state and decided the best way he can serve is to file outlandish bills that:
* Disqualify student IDs for the purposes of voter registration or casting a ballot [[link removed]]
* Lower the age restrictions on Open Carry without license, Concealed Carry, and Handgun licenses from 21 to 18 [[link removed]]
* Further restrict the conditions by which a doctor can intervene to save the life of the mother during pregnancy [[link removed]]
Meanwhile, Democrats are filing bills to improve our communities:
* Representative Jacob Rosecrants (D-Norman) filed a bill that makes it easier to acquire protective orders against stalkers and abusers [[link removed]]
* Representative Annie Menz (D-Norman) is writing legislation to require toll hikes proposed by the Turnpike Authority be approved by the people’s representatives at the Legislature [[link removed]]
* Representative Mickey Dollens (D-OKC) is filing a bill to make it easier for folks to spay and neuter their pets, a key step in driving down overpopulation at animal shelters around the state [[link removed]]
It’s really quite simple. Republicans are whipping up their base with conspiracies of election fraud and gun seizures. They’re writing nonsense laws that ignore the pressing needs of everyday working families.
But Democrats are showing up to do the work. They’re focused on public safety, transparency in government, bringing down the cost of living, and on the health of our neighborhoods.
If you want more public servants putting the needs of their communities first, join us in electing strong Democrats around the state in the upcoming local elections this Spring. [[link removed]]
Local leaders are on the front lines of pushing back on extremist laws. Electing resilient and strong community members committed to their neighbors will be more important than ever under an emboldened Trump. I hope you’ll continue to support our work.
In Solidarity,
