Reflections from Lisa Riley, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Volunteer and National Board Member:
“After losing a close friend to suicide, I was immediately interested in AFSP’s mission and work because of the robust focus on scientific research and its translation into programs and initiatives that make a difference. As a 30+ year Physician Assistant, and now an educator of PAs, that is so important to me. In fact, I was recently able to join with AFSP in organizing a workgroup of PAs across the U.S. to develop a suicide prevention program (Clinical Approach to Suicide Prevention) specifically for medical providers and providers in-training. With AFSP as the collaborating content-partner, we created a program that will educate those who ‘care for people’ in primary care and specialty settings.”
The suicide prevention education program for Physician Assistant students is just one way AFSP has made a difference, targeting specific areas in which we can have the most impact.
Together, through our nationwide network of chapters, we reach communities across the country, delivering prevention education and loss support programs, and increasing the number of volunteers advocating for impactful mental health and suicide prevention legislation, which this past year resulted in 51 bills being signed into law. AFSP is also the largest private funder of suicide prevention research, with $32 million in current studies.
Our work would not be possible without your investment in our mission, and for that we are incredibly grateful.
6,546 Suicide prevention programs delivered nationwide.
308 International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day events held in 25 countries.
$9.7M Invested in new research studies.
51 State bills became laws with the help of Volunteer Advocates.
