Gift Name: A Toilet Price: €10/£9
This is so much more than a Wee Gift.
For families living without decent sanitation, or in areas far from the nearest water supply, access to clean water and toilets can stop the spread of dangerous diseases, like cholera.

They also have the lifesaving power to protect women and children from risk to violence when venturing out to use the facilities.
Kowsar from Sanaag, in Somaliland, explains it best:
“As women, we had many problems before the toilets were built. The field was far from the village, unsafe, and we were frequently afraid of being abused when going out. Our lives have now been transformed now that these latrines are constructed.
The rate of rape cases dropped, and we got some privacy—which was essential to us as women. The latrines became a solution to all the challenges that we had previously faced"

Lomuto, a Community Health Promoter, is currently working to provide nutritional supplements to children in Turkana, Kenya. A devastating drought destroyed their parents’ livelihoods. Sadly, the youngest children and babies always suffer most.
"Communities here lost their livestock, and families' ability to access food, water, and basic necessities has been severely weakened. We're seeing a rise in acute malnutrition, especially among children [and babies]."
While drought hits the poorest and most vulnerable hardest. With your help, we can support children to fight back. |

Alongside building classrooms and supporting vulnerable girls to continue their education, we also tackle gender specific challenges that impact their school attendance.
For Jillo*, the days she was on her period were coupled with shame, meaning she missed school for a week.
“If my period began when I was in school, I would fake a headache and ask the teacher to allow me to go home. I would go home and use the old pieces of clothes as my sanitary towels. That meant I could not move easily and be around people because the minute the clothes fill up, it’s a whole mess.”
Oxfam, and our partners, have supplied Jillo, and 1,100 more girls, with reusable sanitary towels and life skills training to break stigmas and restore their dignity.
Ensuring they never feel the need to miss another day of school. |
