Center Happenings Updates from The NYC LGBT Community Center
In a world that may try to dim our shine, you can rely on The Center as a safe space. This holiday season, and every day, we cherish the merriment we make, the love we share, and the magic we create together. Happy Holidays from your friends at The Center.
| | | In the spirit of the holiday season, we are sharing some of our community members' stories. Read along below, and if you have the means, please consider donating to The Center this season! | | | Community Holiday Reflections | | | |
"When I was 10 years old, I asked my mom what integrity was. She said: 'Integrity is doing the right thing whether anyone is looking or not. Too often, members of the LGBTQ+ community end up relying on themselves to shape the integrity they want to see in the world. We turn to places like The Center to uplift our livelihoods and our values. I’m proud of that!" - Lea DeLaria | | | | "Through my work as a facilitator of Rhythms, The Center’s social support group for BIPOC trans and gender-expansive folks, I lead discussions to help attendees navigate their intersecting identities and joyfully connect with their peers. The Center’s social groups can also help folks find chosen family who help us learn and grow. It is
deeply healing for me to support anyone through their journey to become an advocate in their local community." - Ace | | | | "I’ve been connected to The Center through the Northeast AIDS Ride for 20 years! Initially, I signed up because I wanted a challenge, but I learned very fast that the mileage is not the point at all. The point is the laughs, the mutual support all the way through, and the deeply moving moments. I got swept up by groups of very loving and friendly people. I am inspired by them every day. It is so deeply moving to be a part of this
community. These are not only activists—they’re good citizens." - Nancy | | | | "When I started my recovery process, I searched for sober groups in New York that affirmed my identity—and I found The Center. Before I attended my first meeting, I felt ashamed and nervous to ask for the help I needed; but when I walked in, my fellow group members welcomed me without judgment and encouraged me to share my story. The Center connected me with a support network that truly understood my experience and helped me start my healing journey." - Evan
