It was a busy night at Long Beach City Hall last night, and we came away with some huge victories. The Long Beach City Council took historic action to protect tenants and housing. We have you to thank for sending over 250 letters to help get these protections across the finish line.

On short term rentals, the Long Beach City Council voted unanimously to move forward with a policy that would press pause on the operation of non-primary (un-hosted) short term rentals in Long Beach for 6 months. This moratorium allows the City the chance to do two things:
* Reevaluate the housing market in the future where we’ll have a better sense of what the impact non-primary short term rentals will have on housing.
* Take into account changes to public health standards that must be factored/included to ensure a responsible non-primary short term rental program that does not endanger public health.

On the eviction moratorium, the City Council also took decisive action, voting unanimously to pass the following:
* 60-day eviction moratorium extension.
* 12-month repayment extension.
* June report back on tenant anti-harassment solutions.

Although there are procedural votes to follow before these are enacted officially into law, this is a giant step in ensuring Long Beach tenants and housing are protected.

This was a brave and necessary vote. We want to thank Councilmembers Mary Zendejas, Jeannine Pearce, Roberto Uranga, Rex Richardson, and Vice Mayor Dee Andrews for their leadership. We appreciate the support of Councilmembers Suzie Price, Daryl Supernaw, Stacy Mungo, and Al Austin. We are also grateful for the leadership Mayor Robert Garcia showed throughout this process.

More is to come. But for now, let’s take fulfillment in knowing we changed lives and circumstances last night.
