Michigan Gaming Control Board announces significant impact, revenue contributions to state funds in 2024

DETROIT, Dec. 19, 2024 — The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) today highlighted its significant annual contributions to the state’s economy and public welfare, as the agency continues to support Michigan’s vital public services and community programs.

In 2024, the MGCB generated more than $501.4 million for the state’s School Aid Fund—which directly benefits Michigan’s educational system by providing additional funds for K-12 public classroom education—through a combination of casino wagering taxes, online gaming taxes, and other revenue sources. Of that total, $100.5 million was generated from casino wagering taxes, including taxes from table games and slot machines ($99.8 million), and retail sportsbooks ($655,436). The remainder, $400.9 million, was generated from online gaming wagering taxes, including iGaming ($388.48 million), internet sports betting ($12.9 million), and fantasy contests ($297,219).

Other critical contributions in 2024 include the agency’s tax collections supporting various other state funds, including:

  • $4 million to the First Responder Presumed Coverage Fund to support public safety workers.
  • $3 million to the Compulsive Gambling Prevention Fund to aid in responsible gaming initiatives.
  • $3.7 million to the Agriculture Equine Industry Development Fund to support Michigan’s agricultural and equine sectors.
  • $3.75 million to the agency’s Emmy Award®-winning “Don’t Regret the Bet” integrated marketing campaign, aimed at promoting responsible gaming education across the state.

“As we look back on another successful year, I am proud of the significant impact the Michigan Gaming Control Board continues to have on our state and its residents,” MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams said. “From supporting education and first responders to tackling illegal gambling, the MGCB remains steadfast in its mission to protect consumers and enhance the public good.”

Additionally, the Detroit commercial casinos paid $264.8 million in City of Detroit wagering taxes in 2024, bringing the total payments to the city from 1999 to 2023 to $3.91 billion. In the charitable sector, Millionaire Parties raised $5.35 million in profit for Michigan charities from November 2023 to November 2024.

The MGCB also made significant strides in addressing illegal gambling and promoting regulatory integrity. Thanks to tips from concerned Michigan citizens, the agency removed 206 illegal machines and issued six cease-and-desist letters—actions that further solidify the MGCB’s commitment to maintaining a fair and legal gaming environment. The agency’s national recognition for its efforts to combat illegal gambling—particularly with it being the first state to issue a cease-and-desist letter to Bovada, who complied—has made Michigan a model for other states seeking advice and best practices in regulatory enforcement.

Through its continued work, the MGCB has proven to be a vital and significant financial contributor to the people of Michigan in 2024, supporting education, public safety, charitable causes, and responsible gambling initiatives across the Great Lakes State. In recognition of these accomplishments, MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams was honored as the 2024 American Gambling Awards Regulator of the Year in November at a celebratory dinner that took place in New York City.
