Trial begins in Shakopee over Minnesota House race that could swing anti-choice control of chamber
[[link removed]]
A trial that kicked off Monday in Shakopee challenges the result of the year’s closest Minnesota House race that could swing anti-choice control of the chamber. A batch of mishandled ballots is at the forefront.
GOP candidate Aaron Paul contested the election outcome that determined that DFL Rep. Brad Tabke came out ahead by 14 votes. Paul and GOP officials said the results should be reversed and a special election called in the district since 20 absentee ballots were cast but not counted.
Scott County officials announced last month that the absentee ballots from Shakopee were accepted in October but not counted. The ballots and their secrecy envelopes were likely thrown away accidentally between the time they were submitted and Election Day, according to a preliminary investigation. They said the ballots are unlikely to be recovered in a way that could prove they had not been tampered with.

Texas’ lawsuit against a New York doctor creates a potential new avalanche in the fight against abortion pills
[[link removed]]
Texas' attorney general is taking his anti-abortion crusade beyond state borders. In what may be the first lawsuit of its kind, Texas AG Ken Paxton’s office is suing a New York physician for prescribing abortion pills to a Texas resident through telemedicine.
Filed Thursday, the lawsuit argues that the doctor, Margaret Daley Carpenter, prescribed mifepristone and misoprostol to a 20-year-old Texan woman via telemedicine in May, in violation of Texas state law. The lawsuit signals a potential new front in the fight over abortion access. It’s unclear how Carpenter or New York State will respond.
“Make no mistake: I will do everything in my power to enforce the laws of New York State,” she added. Even so, Paxton’s lawsuit could have serious consequences. As The New York Times reported:
“Legal experts say they expect Texas to try to pursue its case even if it is rebuffed by New York’s law. Such an effort could wind up in federal court, potentially imperiling the ability of women in other states with bans to receive abortion pills by mail, and becoming a major test of whether states can enforce contradictory laws across state lines.”

Hardline activist who raised the idea of jailing women for abortions gets top policy job in Trump administration
[[link removed]]
President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Ed Martin, a hardline, socially conservative activist and commentator, to serve as the next chief of staff at the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).
As CNN first reported in July, Martin has publicly advocated for a national abortion ban without exceptions for rape or incest and has raised imposing criminal penalties on women and doctors involved in abortions.
Martin is a former chair of the Missouri Republican Party chair and former radio host, and served as one of the leaders of the 2024 Republican National Convention’s platform committee, which shaped the party’s official stance on key issues. He is the current president of socially conservative group Phyllis Schlafly Eagles.
The OMB plays a key role in shaping the president’s economic and legislative agenda by reviewing funding proposals and ensuring they align with the administration’s policy priorities.
Martin’s role at OMB could have a potential impact on how federal funds are allocated for programs related to women’s health or reproductive rights.
