Washington, D.C. | www.mpac.org | December 18, 2024 — The Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) expresses deep concern over the apparent influence of external organizations, including the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and other third-party entities, on policymaking at Occidental College. These influences have resulted in administrative decisions that severely constrain student freedoms and fundamentally undermine the principles of free expression and open debate that are critical to democratic engagement in academic settings.
Over the last month, Occidental College's administration has succumbed to external pressures, enacting policies that blatantly restrict the activities of students and student groups, especially those advocating for pro-Palestinian viewpoints. Concerningly, the administration has employed private security firms to monitor peaceful student demonstrations, a tactic that includes severe measures such as locking down academic buildings without just cause, unauthorized surveillance, and the recording of private student interactions.
These policies extend beyond just suppressing student activism; they also significantly stifle discourse and curriculum related to the critique of Israel and Middle Eastern politics. By curbing curriculum and discussions of these topics, the administration not only creates an intimidating atmosphere of intimidation but also undermines the exchange of ideas foundational to academic life and critical inquiry. This trend undermines the college's ability to uphold its commitment to fostering an environment where diverse ideas and debates can thrive, which is crucial for maintaining its stature as a pillar of democratic values and intellectual exploration.
The Muslim Public Affairs Council stands with the faculty and students of Occidental College, who are advocating for a critical reevaluation of recent policies. We call upon the administration to initiate a transparent and inclusive review process that involves a broad spectrum of the campus community, ensuring that any enacted policies reflect the collective interests and uphold the academic and civil liberties of all members.
In resisting these inappropriately restrictive and undermining influences from external groups like the ADL, Occidental College must reaffirm its dedication to maintaining an environment that champions academic freedom, free speech, and open debate. This commitment is essential not only for preserving the college's role as a stronghold of democratic values and intellectual rigor but also for fostering a campus that truly embodies the principles of academic freedom and civil liberties.
