WHEN WE ALL VOTE: THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE UGLY: A roundup of recent voting news
Hi John,
Welcome back to "The Good, The Bad, The Ugly," your go-to source for the latest voting news. Today, we’re keeping it all positive as we dive into the wins that defined the 2024 election season — from new laws to court victories — this year, many people saw positive changes across the country that made it easier for people to vote and make their voices heard. Here's a roundup of the *key wins* for voting rights in 2024.
So, buckle up and join us as we close out this year with some positivity. 😉
🗳️ WISCONSIN IMPLEMENTED FAIRER MAPS
After years of gerrymandering, Wisconsin passed legislation establishing fairer electoral maps and ensuring more equitable district boundaries ahead of the 2024 elections.
🗳️ NORTH CAROLINA IMPROVED VOTING ACCESS FOR HURRICANE VICTIMS
In response to Hurricane Helene, North Carolina passed a law that allowed displaced voters to return mail-in ballots in person, even if they had relocated to a different county. The bill also permitted temporary polling place relocations to make voting more accessible for storm victims.
🗳️ ARIZONA DEFENDED MAIL-IN VOTING AND DROP BOXES
A court ruling in Arizona upheld the state's use of mail-in ballots and drop boxes, which were essential to nearly 90% of absentee voters in 2020. This decision ensured voters continued to have access to secure voting options in 2024.
🗳️ WISCONSIN REINSTATED SECURE BALLOT DROP BOXES
The Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled to reinstate secure ballot drop boxes for the 2024 election. This ruling overturned a 2022 decision, making it easier for voters to submit absentee ballots securely.
🗳️ OHIO DEFENDED DISABILITY VOTING RIGHTS
A federal judge in Ohio struck down a law that criminalized assisting voters with disabilities in returning absentee ballots. The judge ruled that the law violated the Voting Rights Act, ensuring that voters with disabilities would have broader assistance options.
🗳️ ARIZONA COURT ENSURES BALLOT ACCESS FOR 100,000 VOTERS
In Arizona, nearly 98,000 voters who were wrongly flagged as ineligible due to an administrative error were cleared to vote in the 2024 elections. The state Supreme Court’s decision ensured that these voters could participate fully in the upcoming election.
🗳️ VIRGINIA ADVANCED VOTING RIGHTS FOR EX-OFFENDERS
In Virginia, a committee voted to advance a resolution that would restore voting rights for residents with past felony convictions. This move could automatically restore voting rights to thousands of citizens upon their release, allowing them to re-engage in the democratic process.
🗳️ NEW JERSEY EXPANDED VOTING RIGHTS FOR 17-YEAR-OLDS
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed the New Voter Empowerment Act, allowing 17-year-olds turning 18 by the next general election to vote in the primaries. This change, which will take effect in 2026, will give young voters more opportunities to have their voices heard earlier.
🗳️ MONTANA PROTECTED VOTERS WITH DISABILITIES AND YOUNG VOTERS
The Montana Supreme Court struck down several restrictive voting laws that were enacted in 2021 that would have disenfranchised Native Americans, young voters, and voters with disabilities. The Court’s decision expanded voting access in the state.
John, these victories represent significant strides toward making voting more accessible and fair for all. These wins lay a strong foundation for a more inclusive democracy. But the work isn’t finished yet.
As we head into 2025, the fight to improve our democracy is more important than ever. Will you chip in today to help us protect the voices of Americans across the country? >>> [[link removed]]
