We wanted to give you an update about what's happening in
Washington, D.C. in the last few days of the session before
Congress scurries out of town for the rest of the year.
As we warned in September, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and Senate
under Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) are pushing to pass a
1,500-page spending bill that lawmakers haven't had any time to
read. . .
And it's been aptly described as "a total dumpster fire." Other
commentators and members of Congress aren't so nice in their
descriptions.
What was supposed to be a "continuing resolution" has turned into
an omnibus budget bill (the one Mike Johnson promised we wouldn't
get) to spend an additional hundreds of BILLIONS of dollars in
just three months.
Not only does it continue the budget (at astronomical Covid-era
levels) with no cuts, they also threw in $100 billion in disaster
aid among other things.
Better Americans than Ukrainians, but $100 billion?
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), who warned in September this would
happen, noted, "The Swamp is using the threat of a Christmas
shutdown to pressure congressmen into voting for a massive
spending bill they won't be able to read."
The House has a rule a bill must be made public at least 72 hours
before a vote.
But in typical fashion, that rule is being ignored, mostly
because Johnson and Schumer again waited until the last minute so
they could RAM a government funding bill through during the
holidays when good patriots like you aren't normally watching.
Those who have tried to read the bill have noticed some
eye-popping provisions, including a one-year extension of the
State Department's "Global Engagement Center," which funds
organizations that censor conservative media, tens of billions in
wasteful spending, and - what else - a pay raise for members of
Congress.
That's right. While many Americans are struggling to pay their
bills and keep up with rampant inflation, Congress is going to
give themselves a raise of $6,600 per year.
"I had hoped to see @SpeakerJohnson grow a spine, but this bill
full of pork shows he is a weak, weak man," Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY)
lamented on X.
The silver lining in current events is the Senate has approved
the House-passed version of the National Defense Authorization
Act.
That means the provisions we've fought so hard to prevent - an
expansion of the military draft and sending more American money
off to Ukraine - are out!
It's thanks to all of your petitions, phone calls, and support
that we've been able to win this hard-fought battle.
And we've had to track the actions of Congress every step of the
way.
And as we see with the budget, we must always be vigilant and
watching, because Speaker Mike Johnson is always saying one thing
and doing the opposite.
