Family Day: Pajama Party

Saturday, January 4th

10 am - 2 pm

________________________________________________________________________

We are excited to kick off our 2025 Family Day event series with a cozy Pajama Party! Put on your pajamas and bring the family to the State Museum to explore what winter means for Wyoming’s plants and wildlife.

This family-friendly event offers an engaging way to learn about the animal world, focusing on winter survival strategies such as migration, hibernation, and brumation. Activities include:

* Testing out a “blubber glove” to see if kids can submerge their hands in ice water without feeling cold.
* Discovering if your sense of smell is as good as a wolf’s.
* Keeping a precious egg warm during a “Penguin Shuffle” relay race.
* Viewing fascinating biofacts and specimens up close.
* Creating adorable crafts to take home.

Partner organizations, like Audubon Rockies and the Cheyenne Animal Shelter, will add to the fun with activities and expertise. To top it all off, visitors can warm up with delicious winter beverages from the Barrett Creek Coffee parked outside.

Artists should be members of a community that celebrates DDLM. Artists of all mediums (visual arts, music, theater, dance, folk and traditional arts, etc.) are encouraged to apply. However, the winning artist must create a work of art that will work well for print and digital advertising. If an artist creates a 3D work of art, the piece will need to be portrayed in 2D so it will meet marketing needs.

Projects will be evaluated and selected based on whether the application demonstrates:

* A clear connection to a community that historically celebrates Día de los Muertos,
* A unique and authentic approach to representing the cultural significance of traditional and/or contemporary Día de los Muertos traditions in a visually compelling way
* An ability to create artwork that speaks to the diverse people who celebrate DDLM, considering the many places, cultures, and age ranges of people who attend our events.

Wyoming Cultural Trust Fund and the Greenwood Fund of the Denver Foundation fund new drawers for artifact storage.

The Wyoming State Museum recently acquired 50 museum-grade drawers for artifact storage, thanks to support from various funding sources. These drawers are essential for properly housing two significant recently donated collections: one featuring Native American artifacts and the other consisting of firearms. This purchase will provide high-quality storage for these artifacts for decades and allow for continued growth in these collection areas.

“Our gratitude to the Wyoming Cultural Trust Fund and the Greenwood Fund of the Denver Foundation cannot be overstated,” said Mandy Langfald, curator of collections at the Wyoming State Museum. “Their generous support enables us to preserve our collections with the care and respect they deserve. Proper storage is crucial for conserving these artifacts and ensuring that future generations can appreciate the rich history they represent.”

The project was made possible by a grant from the Wyoming Cultural Trust Fund (WCTF), part of the Wyoming Department of State Parks and Cultural Resources, along with support from the Greenwood Fund of the Denver Foundation.

Wyoming Liberty Bell moved out of storage for repairs.

________________________________________________________________________

A replica of the Liberty Bell was presented to the people of Wyoming in 1950. It was displayed in front of the Wyoming State Capitol for many years. After all this time, the steel and wood support system for the bell is in need of some repairs and Wyoming State Parks staff have stepped up to this challenge. The bell was recently moved out of storage for this work and it is planned for return to public display in the next two years in time for the nation's 250th anniversary celebrations.

UPCOMING EXHIBIT:

Robert Frank Photography

January- March, 2025

________________________________________________________________________

For a limited time, photographer Robert Frank’s images of 1956 Wyoming will be displayed at the Wyoming State Museum. Considered one of the most influential figures in the history of photography, Frank redefined the aesthetic of both the still and the moving image via his pictures and films. Soon after his emigration to New York in 1947, Alexey Brodovitch hired Frank as a fashion photographer for Harper’s Bazaar.

The position brought many occasions for travel, and Frank’s impressions of the United States, in comparison to other places, impacted his work. After receiving his first Guggenheim Fellowship in 1955, Frank embarked on a two-year trip across America during which he took over 28,000 pictures. Eighty-three of those images were ultimately published in Frank’s groundbreaking monograph The Americans. His time in Wyoming was part of that larger cross-country journey.

The exhibition will be open from January- March, 2025.
