We want to introduce you to a very brave woman whose life is better because of our Latin America team’s innovative solutions.

Elizabeth Martínez is a mother of two. She fled her home and violent father in Honduras ([link removed]) . “When my daughter was born, I said: Enough… I will not allow my daughter and son to go through the same thing that I have experienced,” she explains.

Heading north with her children, Elizabeth eventually crossed into Mexico. There she encountered thousands of women migrants with similar stories. Fleeing violence, many had also experienced sexual violence during their journey—and now struggled to find essential reproductive health care in an unfamiliar land.

Ipas’s team in Latin America saw this need and took action. The team engaged diverse partners across Mexico to create the first Spanish-language chatbot designed especially for migrants. Called “Te Acompaño” (which means “I accompany you” in Spanish), the chatbot answers questions about sexual and reproductive health, including contraceptives and abortion. It also connects users with pharmacies that sell abortion pills—and with local facilities offering abortion and other reproductive health care.

“I feel very reassured and heard when I use Te Acompaño,” says Elizabeth. “It reassures us that, as women, we’re free and fully entitled to choose what to do with our own bodies.”
