In an end-of-year budget battle, a powerful faction of lawmakers in Congress is trying to deny critical funds to the Social Security Administration (SSA), which would increase the burden on beneficiaries who rely on SSA for vital customer service. |
The refusal by Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and others to adequately fund SSA demonstrates a failure to acknowledge the value of and the real need for the critically important services SSA provides to American workers, retirees, workers with disabilities and their families. This kind of penny-wise, pound-foolish budget approach imposes undue hardship and frustration on millions of Americans and their families. |
|
Imposing hardships on Social Security beneficiaries to receive information or help from SSA can undermine public support for Social Security itself — which is ultimately the goal of some politicians in Washington who want to destroy this popular and effective program. |

According to Senator Chris Van Hollen (MD): “It would be terrible if they have to furlough staff. We should not be cutting the Social Security budget. It just makes it harder for Americans to get their benefits.” |
But as we’ve seen recently, nothing is off the table for those determined to cut earned benefits that growing numbers of Americans are counting on in their retirement. |
These are your earned benefits on the line — because decent service in administering Social Security is itself part of those benefits. It’s vital we fight to strengthen them, and with your signed Petition today, that is exactly what we will continue to do! |
