Dear John,
As 2024 draws to a close we’ve reflected on everything we’ve achieved this year – all thanks to your incredible support.
Before I get to the year’s highlights will you help us spread some festive cheer and send a paperless ecard? We’ve got some cute new designs this year – including a festive otter and orangutan which we hope your friends and family will love.
You can send one for free or add a donation if you'd like to help support our campaigns.

Whenever you sign one of our petitions, tell someone about our campaigns or generously donate, you make a difference. And thanks to your support we’ve had some seriously impressive wins throughout this eventful year (skip to the bottom for a video round-up).
Momentous legal successes
With your help we took the previous UK government to court over its weak climate plan – and won for the second time in 2 years ( [link removed] ). The Labour government now has until May 2025 to write a new plan – let’s make sure it’s a bold and fair one.
You enabled us to support local campaigner Sarah Finch in her successful legal challenge to stop more oil drilling at Horse Hill in Surrey. This Supreme Court ruling set a precedent for other fossil fuel projects – which helped us overturn planning permission for a new coal mine in Whitehaven, Cumbria.
In Northern Ireland, thanks to a joint legal challenge with No Gas Caverns, we quashed plans for giant gas storage chambers under Larne Lough. Precious habitats, marine species and communities are now safe from this massive fossil fuel project. Hopefully for good. But we’ll be ready if the company appeals.
A healthier environment for people and nature
With the help of comedian, Nish Kumar, our Sh*t Beach campaign raised the alarm ( [link removed] ) about the UK’s polluted marine environments – including our biggest lake, Lough Neagh ( [link removed] ).
Thank you if you added your name to our public record of support for a new law to secure everyone’s right to live in a healthy environment. There’s real momentum building for the law, which we’ll keep campaigning for next year.
Greening nature-deprived communities
Within the first year of our Postcode Gardener programme in partnership with The Co-operative Bank – we’ve got 17 new projects off the ground ( [link removed] ), bringing back nature in communities across the country. Together with our Postcode Gardeners, over 1,000 residents and groups connected with nature and each other by getting involved in activities like planting pollinator-friendly plants. We can’t wait to see what next year brings.
Solidarity and the next generation
From much further afield, WALHI (Friends of the Earth Indonesia) send their thanks for helping to highlight the devastating impact of a UK-owned gold mine ( [link removed] ) on communities and the last few Tapanuli orangutans in North Sumatra’s rainforest. More on that early in the new year.
Beyond our campaigns and legal victories, it’s been a challenging year with horrific reports of war crimes in Palestine. At times like this, acting in solidarity is so important. We’ve proudly ( [link removed] )used our voice ( [link removed] ) ( [link removed] ) in support of our colleagues at Friends of the Earth Palestine (PENGON). With your help, we've called for a full arms embargo on Israel and an immediate ceasefire. And we won’t stop advocating for social justice. There’s no environmental justice without it.
We've also seen incredible solidarity from our local groups. Blackwater Valley Friends of the Earth have built power with other local groups to welcome refugees by organising a unity rally, a film screening and so much more. Thanks to you, we’ve been able to provide support to our environmental network and they’ve connected to social justice movements.
We’ve been building power in our communities with our youth network too. This summer, thanks to your support, we brought together 80 young people for a transformative weekend to learn how to campaign. We created a space where the next generation of environmental leaders could connect, learn and inspire each other.
Absolutely none of this would have been possible without you, and tens of thousands of others like you who support us. You are part of a huge movement of dedicated and passionate people who’re fighting for a liveable planet.
Here’s our short video ( [link removed] ), where our interim chief executive, Jamie Peters, shares this year’s highlights on everything you’ve helped make happen in 2024.

As the urgency for action on the climate and nature emergencies is set to continue in 2025, we’ll be ready to push forward to protect people and planet.
But until then, everyone at Friends of the Earth wishes you a peaceful holiday.
Thank you,
Aleanna Shaughnessy,
