Losing a job can mean so much more than a loss of income.
It's a loss of security and stability. For many Americans, losing a job also means losing health care coverage. For folks living paycheck-to-paycheck, losing a job might be the tipping point between having safe housing and experiencing homelessness.
My dad lost his when I was in 4th grade. It was tough, and it took our family a long time to recover. It's why I'll never stop fighting in Congress for workers. I made it my priority to have a jobs protection plan to help stop mass layoffs due to COVID-19. This plan is estimated to save 60 million American jobs by helping 6.1 million businesses keep their employees on the payroll with benefits. Fortunately, our bipartisan jobs protection plan was included in the Heroes Act.
Thanks to Democratic leadership, the Heroes Act passed through the House. Now we need Mitch McConnell to take it up and pass it in the Senate as soon as possible.
If you agree that we need to protect American workers, please sign our petition calling on McConnell to pass this necessary legislation today. This pandemic has already taken so much from us. Too many of us have lost a loved one. Our kids have had to stay away from their friends. Vulnerable adults, including so many of our parents and grandparents, are experiencing the difficult effects of isolation. And it has taken jobs from 36 million Americans. We need to do more to help our workers.
We still need more testing and contact tracing, better treatment options, and ideally a COVID-19 vaccine. Until then, we may not be able to return to "normal."
But we can do more to save jobs and keep our communities whole as we fight the pandemic.
We have to put pressure on McConnell and Senate Republicans to pass this bill. John, take a minute and add your support by signing our petition today.
