And one of our biggest fights is going to be protecting state farm animal welfare laws like Prop 12 from being eviscerated by Congress. Because of your continued advocacy on this issue, we have been able to keep dangerous legislation aiming to invalidate Prop 12 at bay, but we know lobbyists for one well-funded segment of the pork industry are not going to stop their fight …. So we won’t either.

We can’t let one segment of the pork industry that refuses to adapt to the changing farm animal welfare landscape destroy the crucial progress we’ve made for farm animals because they’re more concerned about their bottom line than the suffering of animals. The extreme confinement of mother pigs that they refuse to give up is inhumane and results in unthinkable suffering including mental distress, infectious disease, joint pain, and even self-mutilation.
Compassionate Americans have rejected extreme confinement as an unnecessary cruelty, but misguided lawmakers could still side with the “Big Pork” lobbyists by trying to nullify critical state animal welfare laws like Prop 12, which banned the products of this practice in California. But it’s not just Prop 12 that is at risk. The broad sweeping language could be used to attack other animal welfare laws state by state, and possibly undo basic protections for humans like arsenic and pesticide regulations—even child labor laws!
It’s clear: A segment of the pork industry would rather put profits ahead of animal suffering, human health and safety, and basic respect for the millions of Americans who support strong animal welfare protections in their states. The attack on Prop 12 is just the beginning, and we must ramp up our efforts to protect animal welfare laws in every state in the year ahead.
