As organizers, we ask ourselves this question a lot.

We rarely have to ask, “What happens if we can’t show up?” But right now, we’re facing that very question.

Email your member of Congress: Don’t let Trump attack nonprofits.

The U.S. Congress may vote on a bill as soon as tomorrow that could give a presidential administration unprecedented power to attack any nonprofit organization based on the accusation of wrongdoing.

Here’s the scoop:

This bill, H.R. 9495, would give the Treasury Secretary the power to strip the tax-exempt status from any nonprofit that they claim supports terrorist organizations.

The thing is, it’s already illegal to provide support to organizations designated as terrorists by the government. This bill would make it easier for a presidential administration to accuse any nonprofit of supporting terrorism -- and it even has a way for the Treasury Secretary to refuse to provide reasoning or evidence.

So if a president like Donald Trump were to install a Treasury Secretary who pledges obedience to them, they could retaliate against any nonprofit they don’t like.

Tell Congress to oppose H.R. 9495 -- don’t give the president broad new powers that can be easily abused.

Organizations like Corporate Accountability work hard behind the scenes. Sometimes, we measure our victories in terms of what we stop: keeping Big Tobacco from writing public health policy. Stopping the private water industry from taking over a water system that serves millions of people. Preventing Big Polluters from using their greenwashing schemes to push false solutions that jeopardize our planet and people’s lives.

These victories don’t always make the news. But we and our allies are organizing mightily to make them happen every single day. Because we don’t like to think about what would happen if we decided to simply stop showing up. Or worse -- if we couldn’t show up.

This is a thinly veiled attempt to shut down dissent. But dissent is essential to democracy, and it will be essential during the next Trump era. In the face of authoritarianism, it’s tempting to pre-concede; to shrink ourselves in anticipation of how they may try to make us shrink. But that means letting them win -- before they’ve even assumed office.

That’s why it’s critical that all of us raise our voices today to shut down this bill -- before it’s used to shut down the important work of the many nonprofits fighting for the world we believe in.

Public outcry has already stopped a previous version of this bill once. Now it’s time to do it again. Act now to email your member of Congress and demand they vote no -- no to expanding executive powers and no to targeting nonprofit organizations.
