One of our recurring donors, Gillie Presley from Tuscaloosa, joined Arise 19 years ago because she was tired of putting Band-Aids on Alabama’s problems and wanted to tackle the roots of the issues she cares about most. Over the years, Gillie has been with us through many big campaigns. She helped us pass the Landlord-Tenant Act to secure renters’ rights in Alabama. She advocated in support of a moratorium on the death penalty. And through her work with Arise to reform payday lending, she even started a group to provide no-interest loans to those who needed them.

But what stands out to Gillie the most is our membership model. She gives monthly because Arise is one of the few organizations Gillie has seen where the people affected can make the decisions:

“I am fully blind, so public transportation is really important to me. Thankfully, I have the resources to get from one place to another, but many people don’t. I’ve been a part of other spaces that work on infrastructure, but they have not been interested when I bring up transit. Arise centers us as members and works on the issues that affect everyday Alabamians the most. Plus, as a member of Arise, when you say something to a legislator, they know you have a lot of people backing you up. Arise’s job won’t be done soon – we need everyone to join us in this work.”
