Dear John,
On International Migrants Day, I can’t help but think of the hundreds of migrants that I have met in recent years who endured tremendous hardship and perilous journeys in search of safety and a better life. From Necoclí, Colombia to Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, migrants all share one thing in common: a desire to feel secure in a country that values their contributions.
In more than 30 field research visits over the past 10 years—to five countries and seven U.S.-Mexico border regions—and in constant sifting through mounds of data, two things remain clear:
1. We need rights-respecting regional responses to migration that are centered on access to protection and expanded legal pathways, and
2. We need unflinching U.S. diplomacy and assistance that ease the reasons people are fleeing, like corruption, collusion with organized crime, repression, gender-based violence, discrimination, and climate change.
We’ve seen the incoming administration’s anti-migration playbook before: hate-filled rhetoric, deep xenophobia, and rampant disinformation combine to create inhumane policies that are contrary to the protection of human rights.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
With your support, you can be assured that WOLA will push back on the incoming administration’s abuses, while taking an informed, holistic approach to making migration response fairer and more humane. * Working with members of Congress to demand accountability in the short term and to preserve existing rights and pathways.
* Demanding that the United States uphold the right to asylum , an international standard implemented after the horrors of World War II.
* Regularly producing fact-based, extensive research that policymakers, journalists, academics, and anyone interested in this topic can trust to inform their work, including our Weekly Border Updates, which are downloaded more than 200,000 times per year.
* Proposing ways to address the root causes of migration , including economic factors and climate change.
We will fight back against a fear-based approach to migration. Stand with us on the right side of history for humane migration policy. [[link removed]]
Sincerely,
Adam Isacson
