The hunger for independent news has never been greater.
Over the past few months, daily visits to Democracy Now!’s website have increased to unprecedented levels, making it clear how many people depend on our work at this time of global health and economic crisis.
We're committed to airing the voices of people on the frontlines, including healthcare workers, scientists, organizers and activists, who are telling the truth about what's happening on the ground—and saving lives.
Today, we interviewed Reverend Dr. William Barber, co-chair of the Poor People’s Campaign, who is leading a poor people's digital march on June 20. He explained that poor communities—Black, Brown and White—were exploited by policymakers long before the pandemic, which is why we're seeing such devastation in those communities today.

"These are hard times. And a lot of the pain is by choice. It’s not because of the virus; it is because of the pandemic of greed and lies and trickle-down economics that caused us to move in the wrong direction from the beginning. Even before COVID hit, too many people in power were too comfortable with other people's deaths," Barber said.
If you think voices like Reverend Barber's need to be heard, please contribute to Democracy Now! today. ([link removed])

On Monday, as the COVID-19 death toll topped 90,000 in the U.S., President Trump claimed he’s been taking the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine, even though multiple studies show the drug can cause heart attacks and is not effective in treating COVID-19. Trump's own FDA has warned against taking the drug.
We spoke with Dr. Ashish Jha, the director of Harvard University’s Global Health Institute, about the president's pandemic response, as well as plans in all 50 states to partially reopen by Memorial Day. Jha says that testing needs to vastly improve in order for widespread reopenings to be safe.

"What we really need is a very careful, very slow plan," Jha said. "And, you know, some states, are being responsible. Other states, where cases are still rising and yet they’re opening up bars, worry me immensely."
If voices like Dr. Jha's are important to you, please contribute to Democracy Now! today. ([link removed])

Last week, we also interviewed Haitian American novelist Edwidge Danticat about how the United States is continuing to deport thousands of people during the novel coronavirus pandemic, causing a dangerous spread of COVID-19 to Central America and the Caribbean.
[link removed]
"These deportations are international super-spreader events and are putting a great deal of lives at risk and are offering them up to a medical system that even in the richest countries have suffered. Imagine what it would be like in a place, like Haiti, that’s been so battered and so mistreated. Haitian people are strong, but this is a lot."
If stories like this are important to you, please contribute to Democracy Now! today. ([link removed])
Remember, your tax-deductible donation today will be worth THREE TIMES as much—so please be as generous as you can.
