John, the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood,
perched on the edge of San Francisco Bay, is a community built on the
resilience of its people. Jacqueline Bryant remembers walking its streets as a teenager,
advocating for improvements. Inspired by her father, James
Bryant-a leader in the movement for racial and economic
justice-she continues the fight today as executive director of
the A. Philip Randolph Institute (APRI), an important TPL
partner.

For decades, the people of Bayview-Hunters Point have worked to make
their voices heard. The "Big Five"-a group of
extraordinary women-fought for decent housing, education, and a
healthy environment.

Today, Jacqueline carries their legacy forward, partnering with Trust
for Public Land to transform India Basin into a vibrant, accessible
waterfront park for her community.

I hear a lot of stories about the power, the impact that those women
had . . . I'm one of those young people that are carrying the
torch of the work that they did early on.

WALK IN JACQUELINE'S FOOTSTEPS

Thanks to the efforts of Trust for Public Land, Jacqueline and the
team at APRI, and other local partners, the first phase of
construction is complete. The park features include a beach, restored
tidal landscape, playgrounds, fitness areas, a history center in a
converted shipyard cottage, a new boathouse, a pier, and a
recreational dock for kayaking and fishing. And the community finally
has access to the water after being historically cut off from
it.

But India Basin is more than green space-it's an act of
justice, a commitment to ensuring that long-time residents benefit
from the changes around them. It's a space for families to
gather, play, and connect, and a promise that the generations-long
fight for equality will be honored.

Jacqueline believes it's:

Our time to have a voice in a city process where we don't
normally have a voice. Here's our opportunity to dream really
big.
