Team,

Last Friday, in the dead of night, President Trump fired yet another inspector general – this time, it was the State Department’s inspector general.

Trump has fired a lot of inspectors general. The Intelligence Community IG. The HHS and Transportation IGs. And the Defense Department IG, who also just so happened to be overseeing the coronavirus spending, too.

Inspectors general are essentially government watchdogs tasked with conducting oversight of their departments and rooting out corruption, abuse, waste, or fraud. This is now the fourth inspector general Trump has fired in just the past three months.

In this case, there are reports that the State Department’s inspector general was investigating Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for abusing his position by entertaining potential donors at taxpayer expense and using his staff for personal errands. Worse, he was also reportedly looking into the legality of Pompeo’s decision to advance a massive arms deal with Saudi Arabia despite congressional disapproval last year.

If the inspector general was looking into whether the Secretary of State broke the law, that’s called doing your job. But in this administration, it can get you fired.

We cannot allow Trump to continue to fire those who stand up for the rule of law, transparency and accountability. Congress must ensure that inspectors general can do their jobs and expose corruption, and all the more so if the president is trying to stop them.

If you agree that Congress must protect inspectors general and get to the bottom of Secretary Pompeo’s potential misconduct, add your name now. [[link removed]]

Congress can and must put a check on this president as long as he continues to undermine the rule of law and legitimate oversight over his administration.

Thanks,

Adam
