Big, sprawling, diverse democracies like ours rely on facts and common narratives to hold them together. They need shared realities and traditions that promote compromise and understanding. Unfortunately, today’s social media companies foster the opposite: echo chambers, sensationalism, and harassment. Their business models thrive on division, and they are more effective at spreading lies than facts.
That’s why we at Issue One work tirelessly to hold these social media companies accountable — and it starts with protecting our kids. Safeguarding them is the first step and the best opportunity to generate the bipartisan support necessary to build a healthier online environment.
