LANSING — The campaigns of term-limited lawmakers have repeatedly disclosed making large purchases during the lawmakers' final months in office with no explanation of where the items ended up once the lawmakers departed, according to a new investigation by the Michigan Campaign Finance Network (MCFN) and Fox 2 Detroit.
The investigation also found that unlike federal policies,
state policies do little to prevent former Michigan lawmakers from simply keeping high-dollar items their campaigns previously funded.
The situation stands at a Michigan crossroads, where the state’s term limits — some of the strictest in the nation — intersect with the state’s lax campaign finance law.
