December 17, 2024 Dear John xxxxxx,
As we approach the holiday season, many of us look forward to celebrating with our families and friends and a warm cup of cocoa, coffee, or tea. Unfortunately, this time of year also brings a rise in crime, with seniors being especially vulnerable to scams and theft. I want to make you aware of steps you can take to stay safe.
Protect yourself and your loved ones by keeping these simple tips in mind this season:
- Be sure to secure your home and car. Always lock your doors and windows, even if you’re stepping out briefly.
- Prevent package theft by having a friend or neighbor pick up your packages if you are away.
- Avoid risky situations by traveling with family and friends to stores and asking store security guards for assistance if you feel unsafe.
- When shopping, don’t leave packages in plain sight. Be sure to secure them in the trunk of your car.
With nearly half of consumers now shopping online over the holidays, scammers often try to steal personal information over the internet through deceptive emails and phone calls. Seniors, in particular, are at risk of online fraud.
Stay ahead of cybercrime by following these tips:
- Beware of suspicious emails. Don’t click on links from unknown senders and be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true.
- Avoid phone scams by being cautious of unsolicited calls claiming to be from UPS, FedEx, USPS, or other delivery services. Instead, use official tracking tools or websites to confirm package updates.
- Watch out for financial scams. Be careful with anyone asking for payment through unconventional methods like cryptocurrency, gift cards, or wire transfers.
- Above all, protect your identity. Never share personal information, such as Social Security numbers or bank account details, over the phone.
- Remember, Social Security may call you if you have recently applied for benefits or if you are receiving payments and need to update your information, but they will never threaten you or ask for payments/gifts.
If you suspect fraud, report it to the following resources:
As always, my office is here to help. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns. Wishing you and your family a happy and safe holiday season!
Sincerely,
