Fellow Kansan,

Thank you for subscribing to my newsletter! This week, I am in Washington, D.C., meeting with fellow Kansans and voting on the House Floor. Follow me on social media to see more of my work for the Big First this week.

I do not serve in Congress to be a caretaker in the slow demise of America – I serve to fight and work to make it stronger. That's what I am doing while believing our brightest days are yet to come.

Yours in service,

The Week Ahead

This week, the U.S. House of Representatives will consider legislation to fund the government through March 2025. I’ve been clear—we need a fiscally conservative funding bill that puts taxpayer dollars in places where we can see a return. With our national debt exceeding $36 trillion, America cannot afford for Washington, D.C. to pass reckless spending bills that are filled with pet projects and political wish list items. I look forward to reviewing the text of the Continuing Resolution and considering my vote.

I will also attend my first DOGE Caucus meeting this week. Kansans deserve a government that works for them, spends dollars wisely, and makes it easier for them to make an honest living, not harder. That’s why I joined the DOGE Caucus - to demand a more outstanding, efficient federal government. I look forward to working with the caucus to cut wasteful and fraudulent spending and to roll back burdensome regulations that handcuff Kansans.

Ending the Federal Government's Land Grab in Kansas

I heard countless concerns from Kansans who were displeased with the U.S. Department of Energy's overly vague proposal for National Interest Electric Transmission Corridor and the lack of engagement with landowners. Kansans made it clear from the start that they were not interested in the federal government seizing our private land, so I worked to force the Department of Energy to provide clarity to Kansans and introduced legislation to prevent the federal governmentfrom using taxpayer dollars seizing private property for the proposed corridor. I also made it clear that the federal government should not override decisions made by Kansas state regulators who are more directly impacted by the proposal.

The U.S. Department of Energy just announced that it will no longer pursue its proposed Midwest-Plains and Plains-Southwest National Interest Electric Transmission Corridors (NIETC) in Kansas. This is a huge win for Kansans, and I’m glad our voices were heard in stopping this federal overreach. I will never stop fighting to protect the rights of Kansans.

Saving Kansans $41 Million

Last week, I voted to advance S. 4367, the Thomas R. Carper Water Resources Development Act (WRDA). As Congress negotiated this legislation, I secured language for various Kansas priorities including robust support for the Manhattan levee project, authorization to initiate a study on the replenishment of the Ogallala Aquifer, and an amendment to storage contracts for Milford Lake and Perry Lake that will save Kansans nearly $41 million in interest payments.

WRDA delivers for the Big First District. It improves our communities by putting taxpayer dollars in places where we can see a return in our own backyards.

Restoring U.S. Global Leadership

For four years, the Biden Administration’s weak foreign policy has allowed Communist China and other adversaries to take full advantage of America. Last week, several of my colleagues joined me in expressing concerns to President Biden about Communist China’s growing influence at the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization. A recent proposal from the current FAO Director-General and former Chinese Vice Minister would extend the Director-General’s tenure from eight years to a decade, increase his already $300,000 salary, and give Communist China more control over the U.S.-led World Food Programme. America cannot afford to sit by idly, even during our time of political transition, while China positions itself to expand its influence.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower, one of Kansas' favorite sons, said in his inaugural address, “History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid.” Unfortunately, the Biden Administration has chosen timidness and tip-toed approaches to foreign policy to placate far-left activists. Luckily, this will soon be over. President Trump is committed to securing American peace through strength and making it clear to our enemies that we will not tolerate any nonsense. I look forward to working with President Trump and the incoming House and Senate Republican majorities to restore America’s leadership and make the country safe again. Our brightest days are yet to come.

Recognizing National Impaired Driving Prevention Month

In the United States, someone is killed or injured in a drunk driving crash every 39 minutes, and the average drunk driver has driven drunk 80 times before their first arrest. I introduced a bipartisan resolution with Chris Pappas (NH-01) recognizing December as National Impaired Driving Prevention Month. During National Impaired Driving Prevention Month, we can increase awareness and provide more resources that reduce these tragedies and save lives.

In May 2024, I introduced the bipartisan End Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) Act of 2024, which creates a national ignition interlock standard by encouraging states to adopt mandatory first-time offender ignition interlock laws, helping reduce recidivism and improve road safety by ensuring fewer drunk drivers are on the road. Twenty-four states and D.C., including Kansas, already meet the standards outlined in this legislation. I will continue to support legislation that aims to reduce recidivism like my End DWI Act and makes our roads and passengers safer.

Supporting U.S. Troops and National Security

The price of freedom is not free, and we should support the brave men and women who put their lives on the line to protect those freedoms. I voted to advance the Servicemember Quality of Life Improvement and National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2025 which gives a pay raise to our men and women in uniform, cuts inefficient and wasteful spending at the U.S. Department of Defense, restores the Department’s focus to protecting America rather than culture wars, and supports our national security interests.

This NDAA makes much-needed investments to improve the lives of our service members at Fort Riley and around the globe, deploys resources to secure our southern border, deters Communist China, removes inefficiency and far-left policies at the Department of Defense, and equips our military to defend the United States of America. I am proud to stand with our military.
