Dear Friend,

The fluorescent lights never dim here. I can’t remember the last time I saw the sun, felt the earth beneath my feet, or stretched my wings to their full span.

My world is a cage, barely wider than my body. The wire mesh digs into my feet, which have become deformed from standing on it day after day. To my left and right, above and below, are others like me – thousands of us crammed into this windowless building.

I still want to express my natural behaviors – to nest, to dust bathe, to forage. But there’s no space, no soil, no purpose in trying anymore. The frustration of being unable to do what my instincts scream at me to do has worn me down.

Protect Animals Like Lucy ([link removed])
My body aches constantly. The air burns my lungs and eyes – the ammonia from thousands of my neighbors’ waste collecting below our cages. They bred us to lay eggs far more frequently than nature intended. Some of my cage-mates have simply collapsed, their bodies giving out. They’re left there until the workers do their rounds.

I never got to meet my chicks. Each egg disappears down the conveyor belt. When I hatched, I watched the male chicks being ground up alive, as they are considered useless in the egg industry. The female hatchlings were destined for the same fate as their mothers.
