With president-elect Trump’s inauguration around the corner, major news outlets are digging into the shadowy network of billionaires trying to rewrite our Constitution.

John, I’ve spent some time reflecting on what exactly a Trump presidency means and how important Common Cause’s efforts will be in the next few weeks, months, and years.

One underacknowledged result of the 2024 election is that the megadonors behind Article V now have a clear roadmap to get the remaining states to move forward with an Article V Constitutional Convention. Article V is championed by a faction of millionaire donors and political extremists who want to operate without guardrails to institute their right-wing agenda.

In this agenda is shredding First Amendment protections, gutting environmental regulations, rolling back civil rights advances, and enshrining far-right economics as permanent fiscal policy – which will gut Medicare, Medicaid, and other safety-net programs.

And the worst part? Six states stand between us and a disastrous Article V Constitutional Convention – an event unprecedented in U.S. history that could mean major constitutional chaos.

John, we have no choice but to step up our grassroots response to defeat this effort. We’re tracking scores of bills in the state legislatures and mobilizing our team in response to state-by-state fights that will determine whether our opponents will succeed in undermining our democratic process.
