Dear PPADMV Supporter, Happy holidays from your friends and advocates at Planned Parenthood Advocates for DC, Maryland, and NoVa! As 2024 comes to an end, we now reflect on a year of both triumph and tragedy, assess the pressing issues of the present moment, and plan for the future.

In 2024, PPADMV: -
Held six training sessions, preparing new reproductive rights champions to join us on the front lines

Held PPADMV’s first-ever Planned Parenthood Generation Action Summit, empowering local college students to assert their leadership in the future of reproductive rights

Established new Generation Action chapters at Mary Washington University, Georgetown University, and St. Mary’s College
- Helped rally thousands to the Supreme Court in March to stand up for medication abortion and again in April for emergency abortion care

Hosted four phonebanking and canvassing events, engaging and activating our communities around Question 1 on the Maryland ballot
- Endorsed three candidates in DC’s General Election, all of whom won their respective races

Partnered with Women’s March and fellow advocacy groups to promote and participate in the 2024 Women’s March in Washington, DC
- Attended 18 tabling events, parades, and rallies throughout the DMV

As the new year approaches, we’re assessing the current state of affairs in both federal and local government. In the immediate wake of Donald Trump’s victory in the Presidential Election, here are the facts: - Anti-abortion candidates secured majorities in both the House and Senate

Maryland voters passed Question 1 and added the right to continue or terminate a pregnancy, ensuring the highest-possible degree of state-level protection for reproductive care in Maryland

Looking ahead to January and beyond, PPADMV is preparing to defend and expand reproductive rights for the communities we serve in DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia.
While reproductive rights are currently protected in the DMV, complacency is a luxury we can ill afford. Why?
Because Washington, DC remains vulnerable to congressional interference due to its lack of statehood and persistent threats to its Home Rule
Because abortion access advocates in Virginia have called for a constitutional amendment to protect reproductive freedom, voting rights, and same-sex marriage. And because Virginia holds elections every year, pro-abortion voters must be a persistent presence at the polls. Because while Maryland voters passed Question 1 and enshrined reproductive rights in the state, a federal abortion ban from the future Trump administration has the potential to supersede state-level protections. |
