This is the last week Congress is in session for the 118th Congress. They’ll
be considering a spending bill that will hopefully be uncontroversial - even
your legislators want to be home for the holidays.

Although the presidential inauguration isn’t until Monday, January 20th, House
and Senate members get sworn in at the beginning of the first work week:
Monday, January 3rd. That means you can start calling your members in the
119th Congress in the first week of the year.

_However._ Those of you with new members might have new phone numbers to call
- though not necessarily, sometimes a rep will “inherit” the physical office
and phone numbers from a former rep from the same district. We’ll have these
new members and their D.C. office numbers updated within a day or two. Local
offices will take more time, we’ll have local office numbers for new members
added as they become available.

In addition, proposed legislation for the 118th Congress expires at the end of
the session, so while we can expect long-proposed legislation (extending the
ERA deadline, Medicare for all, etc) to be reintroduced, topics will return to
the site once we can provide the correct information on bill numbers for the
119th Congress.

So what can you call in the waning days of the 118th Congress? While we wait
to hear what will be introduced in 2025, focus on reaching representatives in
your state this week:

### Here’s your best bets for making your voice heard before the new year:

## [Call Your Governor: Deny Assistance for Mass
Deportations]([link removed]-
assistance/?utm_source=5calls&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=farewell-to-
the-118th-congress)

Governors have a unique position as executives of their respective states, and
they wield significant power outside of the federal branches of government.
These officials will be the front line against executive orders that the
upcoming White House will issue, attempting to work its way around any checks
and balances from Congress or the Courts.

Trump has promised (and Stephen Miller [has recently
reiterated]([link removed]-
miller-mass-deportations-
trump/?utm_source=5calls&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=farewell-to-the-118th-
congress)) a mass deportation scheme across the United States soon after
Inauguration Day and inevitably it will involve state assistance to find,
round up and deport immigrants.

Tell your Governor to refuse requests by the Administration to round up
immigrants as part of this cruel plan.

## State Reps: [No Book Bans]([link removed]-

congress) and [Opposing Anti-Trans
Legislation]([link removed]-

the-118th-congress)

Both of these topics will be evergreen under a Trump administration where
state MAGA extremists will be emboldened to push legislation removing opposing
viewpoints and seeking to consolidate power.

just use our script to oppose these kinds of laws in general.
