SPOTLIGHT
*The National Public Safety Partnership: Building Safer Communities Across the Nation*
National Public Safety Partnership [ [link removed] ]
Since its inception, the Department of Justice's *National Public Safety Partnership* [ [link removed] ] has been a cornerstone on efforts to enhance public safety and build safer communities. Launched in 2014 and managed by the Bureau of Justice Assistance, PSP serves as a critical resource for local jurisdictions confronting high levels of violent crime, fostering collaboration and providing assistance to address community challenges.
This year, the Justice Department is marking the 10th anniversary of the National Public Safety Partnership, a milestone in the program’s ongoing commitment to support local law enforcement agencies, community organizations and other partners in addressing public safety challenges. The partnership focuses on empowering law enforcement, bolstering community trust, collaborating with local and federal prosecutors, and implementing data-driven strategies to reduce violence. By bringing together expertise, resources, and proven methods, PSP has helped transform public safety landscapes in cities across the nation.
This year, five new sites were added to the PSP program. They include DeKalb County, Georgia; Pueblo, Colorado; Seattle, Washington; Springfield, Massachusetts; and Tampa, Florida. The program focuses on eight core areas: community engagement, constitutional policing, crime analysis, criminal justice collaboration, federal partnerships, gun violence, investigations and technology.
One of PSP's greatest achievements is fostering partnerships among federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. For example, in Kansas City, Missouri, PSP fostered close collaboration between law enforcement and the mayor’s office, leading to a representative from the mayor’s office actively participating in police department shooting reviews.
By prioritizing evidence-based approaches, PSP has equipped local agencies with tools to analyze crime trends and deploy resources effectively. Cities like Memphis, Tennessee, have leveraged PSP's data analytics support to optimize hot spot policing, significantly reducing gun violence in key areas. PSP recognizes the critical role communities play in public safety.
In Baltimore, Maryland, the program’s community-based efforts focused on building relationships between law enforcement and residents, leading to stronger neighborhood cohesion and shared safety goals.
The impact of PSP is evident in measurable outcomes. As the National Public Safety Partnership continues to evolve, it serves as a model for how federal and local agencies can work together to protect lives and promote peace.

FROM THE VAULT
VOCA [ [link removed] ]
"In December 1982, President Ronald Reagan’s Task Force on Victims of Crime released its final report [ [link removed] ], which described crime victims as “forgotten by the criminal justice system.”"
"Regarded as a historic moment in the victims' rights movement, the task force's final report included 68 recommendations for action to the federal government."
"Among its recommendations, the task force called for federal funding to support crime victim compensation programs and local victim assistance programs. Acting on that recommendation, Congress created the Crime Victims Fund in 1984 through the Victims of Crime Act [ [link removed] ]."
