Memorial Day weekend won’t be the same this year, but there’s still hope for reclaiming the fun of the unofficial start of summer with the Front-Yard-A-Cue front yard cookout all over Oswego!
The Village of Oswego encourages residents to plan their typical Memorial Day weekend cookouts, but move their grills and the picnic tables to the front yard from 4 to 7 p.m. this Monday, May 25. Wave “hi” to the neighbors, swap grilling tips and techniques from a safe social distance, and fill the whole block with the sights, sounds and smells of summer – from grilled meats to kids running through the sprinklers.
Snap photos of your block’s celebration and enter our contest on social media to win a gift basket of goodies from local Oswego businesses! Prizes will be awarded to two winners in each of the categories below:
- Most Local Oswego BBQ: Grill some brats from Sage’s or get your BBQ ready to eat from Piggy’s, wash it down with a growler from Oswego Brewing or bottle from Fox Valley Winery, or deck out the tables with flowers from Floral Expressions or table décor from Velvet Grace. Pick up curbside or get delivery from a local business, snap a photo of your celebration, and tag the Oswego-based independent businesses represented in your photo.
- Most Patriotic Front Yard: This year’s Memorial Day parade may have been canceled, but Oswego still salutes the men and women who have given their lives in service to the country. Show us your red, white and blue (clothing counts too!) on your picnic table or in your front yard!
To enter, post your photos to Facebook or Instagram, and tag them #OswegoTogether6ftApart.
Next up: Join us from home for a free live concert!
Missing summer festival season? Us too. But you can join the Village of Oswego for one of your favorite summer festival bands, right from your backyard, living room, or anywhere else you can stream, from 7 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 30!
Vicarious was such a hit at last year’s Wine on the Fox, that we invited them back for more of their signature easy listening classic rock. When we postponed, the band known for their tight harmonies, eclectic flair, and jams you can’t not sing along with, agreed to give Oswego their own live online show.
Set the screen up in the backyard, bring your snacks, drinks and dancing shoes, and tune in to watch on the GoOswego Facebook page live from 7 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 30.
Fun at-home challenges all week long!
In between, we’ve got a week full of activities and opportunities to show us your creative ways of getting through the home stretch of the Stay at Home Order.
- Monday, May 25: Honor our veterans! Take a picture of your family with an American Flag at the Village of Oswego’s Front Yard-A-Cue.
- Tuesday, May 26: It’s getting hairy out there. Share a picture of your best (and worst) home haircut attempts.
- Wednesday, May 27:Sleep under the stars. Pitch a tent in the great outdoors of your backyard and show us your set-up! (Indoor camping counts, too.)
- Thursday, May 28:Make a birdhouse from found objects, or run through your sprinkler or homemade Slip n Slide.
- Friday, May 29: What's cookin', Oswego?Show us your sourdough disasters or your epic culinary wins. Send us a pic of a new recipe you tried, and the recipe too!
And be sure to follow @GoOswego to share and see your neighbors’ creations.
