[link removed] [[link removed]] Let’s talk about Donald Trump and his new attorney general pick Pam Bondi, because, boy, do we have a story to tell.

By May 2011, the Florida Attorney General’s office had received 22 complaints related to Trump University and the Trump Institute.

In 2013, the New York attorney general sued Trump University for “persistent fraudulent, illegal and deceptive conduct.” Bondi’s office said they were reviewing the suit and considering joining.

Then the Trump Foundation donated $25,000 to a political group supporting Bondi called And Justice for All.

There’s one big problem here: Nonprofit organizations like the Trump Foundation are prohibited from all political activity, including contributing to political organizations.

The Trump Foundation’s 2013 tax return falsely reported no political donations, replacing And Justice for All with a similarly named nonprofit in another state.

So CREW filed an IRS complaint to shine a light on the Trump Foundation’s flagrantly illegal activities.

And as for the Florida Attorney General’s office? Despite previously acknowledging the 22 complaints to reporters, internal emails show that between October 17 and 18, 2013, Bondi’s employees reviewed the matter and claimed there was only one complaint against Trump University.

Trump representatives admitted to the illegal donation, blaming it on a series of clerical errors (we had a lot of questions about that, and you can read more about those here [[link removed]] ).

We kept digging, and filed a series of IRS complaints against Trump and the Trump Foundation, and we also filed complaints against Bondi with the Inspector General for Florida’s Office of the Attorney General and the state’s Commission on Ethics for potentially violating the law.

Our legal and investigative work found that the Trump Foundation did not file an updated 990 tax form, which led to the Washington Post discovering a $2,500 IRS penalty paid by the Foundation for the illegal donation, kicking off one of the biggest stories of the year back in 2016.

So we filed criminal bribery complaints against Trump and Bondi with the Department of Justice and called for a criminal investigation into whether the Trump Foundation broke federal criminal law by making numerous false reports to the IRS on its tax forms.

What happened once we called for that investigation? Trump announced he’d be closing the Trump Foundation.

John, let’s break this down: Trump gave an illegal $25,000 contribution to a group backing Florida AG Pam Bondi while her office was reportedly investigating Trump University. After the donation, her office decided not to take action against Trump University.

In the time since Bondi left office, she served on Donald Trump’s defense team during his first impeachment trial, stood by him at his criminal trial in New York and filed an amicus brief taking issue with Special Counsel Jack Smith’s appointment in Trump’s classified documents case.

Now, in 2024, Trump has nominated her to become attorney general.

Bondi has benefited from Trump, and she has proven her loyalty to him.

During her confirmation hearings, the Senate Judiciary Committee must consider all of these facts and determine whether she can act as a true public servant rather than just a Trump loyalist if she becomes attorney general.
