More about my time with the Care Fellowship.

John,

My life changed on a seemingly normal day in 2016 when I received a call from a family friend who told me something was wrong with my mother and that she needed help. Not even a year later, my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. At just 29 years old, I was moving back in with my mother full-time.

As most of us know, caregiving without community can be lonely, especially as someone so young - I knew I needed to find people who understood what I was going through.

I began sharing my story and glimpses into my everyday life on social media in 2020 and, before I knew it, my account had amassed a following of over 600,000! Soon after in 2022, I applied for the Care Fellowship to learn how to use my platform to advocate to change our broken care systems.

Being a part of the Care Fellowship gave me a place to meet and really get to know other caregivers like me across the country. It allowed me to broaden my view of care, and it also gave me a healthy way to channel the anger, pain, and frustration that comes with living in a society that doesn’t value care.

I found that so many other caregivers were also looking for stories, connection, and community, and it made me realize that care is truly at the center of so many of our lives and we can’t do it alone.

The Fellowship program made me a stronger advocate and helped me understand that sharing my story can be a catharsis for me, and a way to build community and advocate for policies that improve the lives of caregivers across the country.

Our stories are important and our collective voice is so much louder than any one of us individually - the Fellowship program and my community online have shown me that.

Now more than ever, we need each other. I’m proud to help be just one of those voices bringing care into the larger conversation in our country, but we need you, your perspective, your story, and your voice, too.

With care,
