Bruce Friedman, the so-called "No. 1 book banner," has challenged more than
900 books in Clay County alone. Fueled by extreme laws championed by Governor
DeSantis and advocated for by Moms for Liberty, Florida leads the nation in
book bans. And not that it matters, these aren't just obscure titles—they
include literary treasures like The Handut maid’s Tale and I Know Why the Caged
Bird Sings.

This effort is part of a broader attack on public education, targeting
knowledge and diversity under the guise of “protecting children.” It’s already
cost counties like Clay thousands of taxpayer dollars in resources to process
these objections. Meanwhile, our kids lose access to stories that build
empathy, critical thinking, and a broader worldview.

We cannot let this stand.
