It's never been more important to make our voices heard at the ballot box. We need competent leadership in Washington that puts working families first, so it's about time we send Trump and his anti-science yes-men in Congress packing.

But to do that, we must make sure everyone can vote safely from their home this year. Many states, including New Jersey, are expanding vote-by-mail access for our upcoming primaries, but we are going to need a secure national mail-ballot strategy for November so no one has to choose between doing their civic duty and risking their health.

House Democrats' HEROES Act is the first step to making mail-in ballots a reality for 2020. This is not the time for a piecemeal state-by-state strategy where Republicans are sure to stop any efforts to make voting more accessible. Trump has even said that our efforts to expand mail-ballot access would be bad news for Republicans.

Using a pandemic as a voter suppression tactic is dangerous to public health and a threat to our democracy. Every eligible voter needs to be able to cast their vote safely this year -- we cannot accept anything less.
