Hi John,
Today is the 50th anniversary of the federal Safe Drinking Water Act, signed by Republican President Gerald Ford. While we’ve made important progress since 1974, too many Wisconsinites are still suffering from contaminated drinking water. This urgent issue must be addressed. As 2025 approaches, we are headed into a new legislative session with fair maps, 34 new legislators, and a $4 billion surplus in the state budget. This is an opportunity to finally make substantive progress on safe drinking water. But we have to organize and fight for it.
At Wisconsin Conservation Voters, one of our seven guiding principles is that our work is based in community. So over the past nine months, we held listening sessions in six different communities and met one-on-one with more than 30 partner groups to identify our water-related priorities for the 2025-26 legislative priorities. Then, last week, we and 30 of our coalition partners sent a letter to the Wisconsin Legislature, urging them to protect public health by taking action on safe drinking water. You can read the letter here >>>

Our three main asks for legislators are to protect Wisconsin communities by: -
Supporting $953 million for our public water infrastructure;
- Supporting policy changes that protect private well owners; and
- Supporting preventative action.
This is only the beginning of our work. Look out for emails from us about how you can help us advocate for clean drinking water – because we can’t do this without you. We’ll need you to write your legislators and join us on Conservation Lobby Day on May 6, 2025 (so save the date!). We need funding in the state budget and strong legislation to address this issue. Wisconsin families need action now.
