As we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the federal Safe Drinking Water Act, signed into law on December 16, 1974, it’s crucial to build on decades of progress in securing safe drinking water while remaining vigilant in addressing the challenges we face today.
While we’ve achieved critical milestones, such as establishing the first-ever drinking water standards for certain 'forever' PFAS contaminants, significant threats to clean, safe water remain. Anticipated regulatory rollbacks of existing environmental protections, along with the failure to address unregulated and emerging contaminants like 6PPD, perchlorate, and microplastics, continue to put our communities at risk.
Bedrock environmental laws, like the Safe Drinking Water Act, are under threat. In his last term, President Trump rolled back over 100 environmental safeguards, including weakening or delaying protections for drinking water and contaminant standards under the Act, leaving waters more vulnerable to pollution and exploitation.
