TUNE INTO LIVE WITH LITTLEWOOD TONIGHT
WEDNESDAY 20TH MAY
6pm onwards – on our YouTube Channel ([link removed])

With coronavirus infection rates falling and the economic devastation from lockdowns rising, is it time to ease restrictions?

The Chancellor this week admitted he feels "all economic forecasters and economists would agree the longer the recession is, it is likely the degree of that scarring will be greater". How can the UK economy bounce back?

Meanwhile, two members of the government’s scientific advisory council have said Boris Johnson should resist calls to ease the lockdown until a new system to trace the spread of coronavirus is a proven success.

One solution is the contact tracing app under development by NHSX. But will it work? And what are the implications for civil liberties?

And a backlash is escalating over the government’s policy of lifting the lockdown on schools from 1st June, with at least 18 councils rebelling and up to 1,500 schools expected to remain closed. What lessons could we learn from overseas?

On the continent a number of countries have further eased their coronavirus lockdown restrictions this week. Should the UK follow suit?

IEA Director General Mark Littlewood will be joined by other think tank experts and commentators for a thought-provoking, interactive discussion.

PROHIBITION AND THE PANDEMIC
TOMORROW – 5-6PM

IEA Head of Lifestyle Economics Christopher Snowdon will tomorrow be joined by Dr Jeffrey Miron (Senior Lecturer and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Economics at Harvard University), Dr H. Westley Clark (the Dean’s Executive Professor of Public Health at Santa Clara University) and the classical liberal academic and author Dr Jamie Whyte, to discuss “Prohibition and the Pandemic”.

Governments around the world have adopted a range of measures on alcohol, tobacco and e-cigarettes in response to the pandemic. While some countries have defined alcohol shops and tobacconists as essential services, others have introduced full prohibition.

History shows that prohibitionists never allow a crisis to go to waste, so has the pandemic provided a vital cover and opportunity for nanny statists to push through their agenda? Are any of the new restrictions justified and are they likely to remain in place after the crisis has passed?
