Congress ( [link removed] )
John,
Next Tuesday we’ll
celebrate the anniversary of the ratification of the 14th
Amendment to the Constitution, which guarantees all Americans
citizenship and equal protection under the law.
Passed in 1866 by a courageous Congress which moved to unify the
nation following years of civil war, it gave millions of
formerly-enslaved families hope for a future as equal citizens.
Today, its 400 words continue to inspire millions struggling to
build a better life.
This is a uniquely American promise: if you’re born or
naturalized within our country’s borders, you’re a full member of
the American family with equal and undeniable civil and human
rights.
Still, there are some in our government who want to restrict
that identity and roll back those protections in an attempt to
further divide us and turn American citizenship into an exclusive
commodity.
I won’t stand for this
division in South Florida or in Washington, and I know you won’t
either. Sign your name to our demand that our leaders uphold the
rights of citizenship and equal protection for all Americans. ( [link removed] )

It’s clear that we have
much work to do to live up to the promise of the 14th Amendment -
especially for immigrants, members of minority groups, and our
friends in the LGBTQ community.
