Hi John,
I’m reaching out because I can’t stop thinking about Mari and Vaigai, the two elephants living in heartbreaking conditions at the Honolulu Zoo. For decades, they’ve been confined to a space that denies them the freedom and dignity all elephants deserve. After reading Dr. Lindsay’s message below, I felt more determined than ever. Mari and Vaigai don’t have a way to advocate for their rights or to demand the freedom they deserve—but we do. That’s why I’m asking you to join me in speaking up for them. |
Our action alert allows you to easily send a message to the director of the Honolulu Zoo, urging her to do what’s both right and long overdue: release Mari and Vaigai to a sanctuary where they can live the rest of their lives with autonomy, space to roam, and the companionship they desperately need. With gratitude,
Kelly Holt, Digital Coordinator, the NhRP

“Without the right to liberty, elephants cannot have their interests defended in court, and they will continue to be exploited by humans for profit while denied any semblance of a reasonable life.”
Dear John,
Dr. Keith Lindsay is a wildlife ecologist and conservation biologist who’s studied elephant behavior and ecology for over 45 years. Today, as part of our end-of-year giving campaign, he shares what he felt the first time he saw an elephant in a zoo, the intense physical and emotional harms of depriving elephants of their autonomy in zoos, and why he’s joined the NhRP in calling for elephants’ right to liberty.

Thanks to a generous matching gift made by a fellow NhRP supporter, all donations to the NhRP will be tripled now through Sunday. Please help us make the most of this amazing giving opportunity by donating today!
We extend our deepest gratitude to all the elephant cognition and behavior experts who’ve supported the NhRP’s fight for elephants’ right to liberty this year and to all our supporters who have helped raise awareness of the amazing capacities of elephants and how they suffer when deprived of their freedom. Thank you! Courtney Fern
