John,
Donald Trump’s pick to lead the IRS, former Congressman Billy Long, has one goal: to dismantle the agency from within. During his time in Congress, Long co-sponsored a bill to abolish the IRS in favor of a regressive 30% national sales tax.[1] Now, Trump wants him in charge of the very agency he tried to destroy.
The current IRS Commissioner, Danny Werfel, was confirmed for a five-year term in 2023 and has achieved incredible progress in cracking down on wealthy tax cheats, collecting over $1 billion in unpaid taxes from the ultra-rich and implementing Direct File―a new program saving taxpayers millions of dollars in online tax-filing fees.[2]
Replacing him now threatens to derail this progress and leave the IRS powerless to enforce our tax laws.
Billy Long isn’t just unqualified, he’s dangerous. After leaving Congress, he worked in a fraud-plagued industry exploiting tax credits.[3] His nomination signals a green light to millionaire tax cheats and corporate elites to evade taxes while hard-working Americans are left behind.
We cannot let Trump and his allies undermine the IRS from within. Tell the Senate to reject Billy Long’s nomination as IRS Commissioner.
Billy Long’s appointment is a blatant attempt to return the IRS to a broken status quo where the richest Americans get away with paying little to nothing in taxes. If, as seems more than likely, the agency under Billy Long relaxed, slowed, or altogether halted recent enforcement efforts, this nomination would reward those who evade taxes―taking tax dollars away from public services that serve working people.
Think about what’s at stake: under Commissioner Werfel, the IRS has recovered over $1 billion to fund better schools, invest in public infrastructure, and expand healthcare access. A weakened IRS under Long’s leadership that lets wealthy tax evaders run wild again would harm every community across the country.
This isn’t only about numbers and policies, it’s about values. Do we want a tax system where only ordinary Americans play by the rules and are left to pick up the tab for wealthy tax cheats? Or do we demand a system where the wealthy pay what they owe? Long’s nomination shows which side Trump and his allies are on.
Your voice is critical to stopping the next administration from dismantling the IRS. By rejecting Billy Long’s nomination, the Senate can take a stand for fairness, accountability, and a tax system that serves all Americans, not the wealthiest few.
Stand with us to demand the Senate reject Billy Long’s nomination and keep the IRS focused on serving the public and enforcing laws against tax evasion by the wealthy and big corporations.
Together, we can protect the progress we’ve made and ensure a fairer, stronger future for all Americans.
