12 years ago today, 20 young children and six educators were shot and
killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT — the fourth
deadliest mass shooting in the country’s history and the deadliest one to
take place at an elementary school.
12 years ago today, we said never again.
12 years later, mass shootings continue to occur unabated every single
day.
John, gun
violence and mass shootings are a uniquely American epidemic. Each day, 12
children in America die from gun violence. Another 32 are shot and
injured.
Guns continue to be the leading cause of death among our kids and teens.
In the decade after Sandy Hook, there were 189 school shootings across the
country that have resulted in at least one fatality. From Parkland to
Uvalde, these names have become synonymous with grief and anguish.
With each shooting, another community is thrust into the spotlight. We
begin another conversation on the need for more gun control. Then as
attention fades, we gradually lose interest until it happens to another
community.
This is a vicious and sickening cycle. But it doesn’t have to be this way.
Common-sense gun legislation has proven time and time again to save lives.
The refusal of Republicans to protect our kids and our lives is nothing
short of despicable.
Students and teachers shouldn’t have to feel unsafe going to school.
Visiting the grocery store shouldn’t be a death sentence. Concert and
moviegoers shouldn’t be looking for the closest exit.
We ALL have a right to feel safe in our communities.
With Republicans set to hold a trifecta in Washington D.C. for the next
couple of years, that doesn’t mean the work to create a future free from
gun violence will disappear. It will only strengthen our resolve to push
for the future we all deserve.
To honor the lives we lost 12 years ago, we will never stop pushing for
the transformative legislation we need to protect our children and
communities from harm. We hope to have your support as we work toward
making this goal a reality.
