Working on this project reminded me how far we’ve come — and how powerful we are. In 2011, Food & Water Watch became the first national environmental organization to call for a ban on fracking. As part of the coalition New Yorkers Against Fracking (NYAF), we mobilized the power of hundreds of grassroots organizations statewide. Together, we transformed the call to ban fracking from a fringe demand to a common position across the environmental movement. This boosted successful efforts to ban fracking in Maryland and, this year, in California. It kick-started the campaign to ban fracking on federal lands and informs our work against fossil fuels in Pennsylvania. It also laid the groundwork for recent wins in New York, like getting fracked gas out of new buildings and passing a bill to ban fracking with carbon dioxide. As we prepare for an impending Trump administration, New York’s fracking ban-niversary reminds us that we won against long odds before. With the right mix of smart strategy, strong community, and relentless determination — all things Food & Water Watch has in spades — we can achieve unprecedented victories. We can win against powerful industries, greedy corporations, and their allies in government. And with you, we’ll keep building a brighter future where we all have access to clean and affordable water, healthy and sustainably grown food, and a safe and livable climate. Thank you for your support this year, John! Celebrate with us and prepare for the fights ahead by reading “People Power vs. Fracking: The Winning Strategies Behind New York’s Fracking Ban.”
