Good morning John,
In towns and villages across Northern Ireland, our marching bands are the musical heartbeat of our communities. They bring people together to celebrate and express their culture through music, while nurturing talent from a young age.
As someone who deeply values the incredible musical talent and dedication within our communities, I was delighted to announce a significant investment this week that will directly benefit thousands of people of all ages across Northern Ireland.
This funding, totalling over £800,000, reflects the DUP’s strong commitment to supporting cultural expression and developing world-class musical talent. From marching bands and school groups to traditional musicians and musical societies, the range of recipients highlights the diversity and richness of our cultural heritage. I am confident that this funding will not only sustain those already involved but it will also help to inspire and develop the next generation of musicians.
Our marching bands deserve special recognition for their dedication and hard work. Week after week, in Orange Halls, band halls, and other community venues, thousands of people come together to practice, perform, and build a network that is unique to Northern Ireland.
I am proud that we were able to increase the funding allocation this year, ensuring that every eligible band that applied for this grant has received support. This financial boost will help these bands continue their invaluable work, particularly in providing young people with opportunities to develop new skills, build confidence, and foster a sense of community. It will complement the tireless fundraising by bands that helps to meet the cost of keeping a band on the road and improving their musical repertoire.
Looking ahead to 2025, and working with DUP colleagues in Westminster, Stormont and local Councils, we are determined to do even more to support musical and cultural expression across Northern Ireland. We are actively exploring further opportunities to invest in the arts, and to ensure funding is distributed in a fair and equitable way. We are committed to addressing historical imbalances in funding to ensure that all parts of our community benefit from these opportunities, helping to build a vibrant cultural landscape for future generations.
Yours sincerely,
Gordon Lyons MLA
