Two years ago this month, Governor Josh Green took office with the mission of bringing people together to take on our biggest challenges — including building more affordable housing, reducing homelessness, and bringing down the cost of living for working families in our state.

In his first two years in office, Governor Green has taken unprecedented steps to make Hawaii more affordable, signing the biggest tax cut in our state’s history and moving Hawaii from the second-highest to the fourth-lowest income tax burden in the country.

This historic tax reform will reduce taxes from 10% to 72% depending on household income, saving the median-income Hawaii family a total of nearly $20,000 over the next seven years.

The governor also signed new laws making government more transparent and accountable, and used his line-item veto power to cut $500 million in unnecessary spending from the budget this year and $1 billion last year — all without cutting needed services.

In his first two years, Josh took on Hawaii’s housing shortage — delivering the most significant housing regulatory and zoning reforms in over 40 years to cut red tape and build affordable housing for Hawaii’s nurses, teachers, and firefighters.

“Our goal is to reduce the cost of living in Hawaii as much as possible for our residents,” Josh said, “so working families can afford to live here and our next generation can have a future here.”

Since the devastating fires on Maui last year, Governor Green has led the recovery effort by moving more than 99% of displaced families into long-term housing — building 1,044 units of transitional housing to meet the community’s temporary housing needs, and an additional 810 new units of permanent housing across four projects.

Josh has also made reducing homelessness a top priority in his first two years, building dozens of new kauhale villages across our state which will help cut homelessness in half by 2026.

Since taking office Josh has signed new laws to strengthen gun safety, as well as holding gun buyback events to take hundreds of dangerous firearms off our streets and make our communities safer.

The Green administration has invested in our healthcare system, bringing more medical professionals to areas in need, and maintaining Hawaii’s position as a national leader in healthcare with the lowest uninsured rate in the country and the best outcomes — consistently ranked as one of the healthiest states in the nation.

Josh has also taken important steps to reduce carbon emissions in Hawaii, combat climate change, and protect our environment — including draining the fuel from Red Hill and making sure it is shut down for good.

“We have made enormous progress in our first two years,” Josh said, “but there are still too many families struggling and there is so much more to do."

From cutting taxes for working families, to building affordable housing, to opening kauhale villages across the state to reduce homelessness, Josh and his administration have delivered real results on the issues that matter most to the people of Hawaii.
