The Hawaii Republican Party’s
Statement on Respect for
Hawaiian Culture and Language
The Hawaii Republican Party would like to address recent remarks made by an individual, “Kai” Anita Lorinc, who has written disparaging stories about party leadership and has recently made statements regarding the Hawaiian language and community. During a recorded meeting, this individual referred to the Hawaiian language as a "dead language" and made comments that have understandably offended many in the Hawaiian community. We want to unequivocally state that she is not a member of the Hawaii Republican Party, and her views do not reflect the values or principles of our party.
The Hawaii Republican Party stands proudly as the party of Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana‘ole, a statesman who tirelessly advocated for the rights, culture, and dignity of the Native Hawaiian people. Prince Kuhio’s legacy is a guiding light for our party, reminding us of the importance of preserving and honoring the unique culture, traditions, and language that are the heart and soul of Hawaii. The Hawaiian language is alive and should be supported in this state to embrace the culture, this can be evidenced by the resurgence of Hawaiian immersion schools, cultural programs, and the use of ʻŌlelo Hawai‘i in government and everyday life. It is an integral part of what makes Hawaii a special and unique place.
As Republicans, we celebrate and uphold the values of aloha, respect, and unity. Our commitment to the Hawaiian community is unwavering. We acknowledge the profound contributions of Native Hawaiians to the cultural fabric of our state and recognize that it is this culture that defines the aloha spirit, which we all cherish and strive to embody.
We denounce the disparaging remarks made by Ms. Lorinc as they do not align with the principles of respect and inclusivity that are foundational to our party. Furthermore, we reaffirm that the Hawaii Republican Party has no affiliation or relationship with this individual.
The Hawaii Republican Party remains committed to working alongside the Hawaiian community to address the issues that matter most, including education, economic opportunity, and the preservation of Hawaii’s rich cultural heritage. We believe that unity and mutual respect are essential to building a brighter future for all who call Hawaii home.
We call upon all individuals and organizations to join us in fostering a spirit of aloha and to reject divisive rhetoric that undermines the values we hold dear. Together, we can honor the legacy of Prince Kuhio and continue to uphold the rich cultural traditions that make Hawaii truly special.
Aloha,
Tamara McKay
