January Membership Meeting: Meet Our New York State Senators & Assemblymembers

January Membership Meeting:
Meet Our New York State Senators & Assemblymembers

Get ready for our first Membership Meeting of 2025! Join us on Saturday, January 11th at 10:00 AM for a chance to meet our New York State Senators and Assemblymembers. We have invited them all to attend, tell us a little about who they are and how they plan to represent us and hear about environmental and climate justice policies we would like them to support actively. To date, New York State Assemblymember Manny De Los Santos (District 72) and Assemblymember-Elect Jordan Wright (District 70) have confirmed attendance, but we expect more to attend.

You don’t have to be a WE ACT member to attend (though it only costs $25 per year – learn more here). Come join us and get involved with our state policy initiatives we are championing in the 2025 legislative session! RSVP

WE ACT Earns Grant to Lead Citywide Effort for Environmental Justice Solutions

We're happy to report that we received a Community Change Grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, funding which was made possible by the Inflation Reduction Act. Working with the Pratt Center for Community Development and other partners, we will lead a citywide effort to develop community-based solutions to the challenges listed in New York City's EJNYC Report, a comprehensive assessment of environmental justice issues across the city. Many thanks to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer for his support and leadership on this. More to come!

Uptown Chats Podcast: A Conversation with EPA Region 2 Administrator Lisa Garcia

What do the regional offices of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) do, and how do they advance environmental justice? In this episode, Jaron and Lonnie sit down with EPA Region 2 Administrator Lisa Garcia to learn about the work she and her team have been doing in EPA Region 2, which includes New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and eight Indian Nations. Teaching the Next Generation

We recently took students from the Historically Black Colleges & Universities Immersion in Geospatial Intelligence program on our East Harlem environmental justice tour as part of their interactive day of engagement in New York City. Harris-Stowe State University hosts the program in partnership with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.

NYU Students Support WE ACT

We were awarded $29K from the Philanthropy and Social Difference class at New York University's Gallatin School in a competitive bid the students conducted to determine which nonprofits they wanted to fund. WE ACT, the Ifetayo Cultural Arts Academy, and the Louisiana Abortion Fund were the three selected from the nearly 70 groups participating. Rachel Wissner (pictured above, far left) accepted the donation on behalf of WE ACT.

Retailer Report Card

Before You Shop: Learn Which Stores Are Selling You Toxic Products & Which Are Trying to Keep You Safe

The 2024 Retailer Report Card has been released by our friends at Toxic-Free Future. It reviews major retailers in the U.S. and Canada to see who is safeguarding our health and who is selling us toxic products. For example, we learned that Sephora is working hard to keep toxins out of the products it sells, but Sally Beauty is most definitely not - so buyer beware! We encourage you to give it a look before you start your holiday shopping. Read the Report & Read the Announcement

Charles Callaway, Marie Callaway, and Evelyn Joseph at Columbus Circle Holiday Market

End of an Era: Charles Callaway

Charles Callaway, our colleague for the past 17 years, is moving on to the next chapter of his fascinating career – which has been documented here, here, and here. Charles has been a cornerstone of our work in Harlem – from the Mother Clara Hale Bus Depot and the 125th Street Rezoning to Workforce Development and Solar Uptown Now. If you have a chance, take Evelyn’s lead (pictured above) and swing by the Columbus Circle Holiday Market where Charles and his wife, Marie, have a pop-up shop (D8 on this map) selling scarves and other accessories – all designed by the big man himself – as they do every holiday season.
