Reflections from Lisa Riley, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Volunteer and National Board Member:

“It was the loss of my dear friend and colleague, Rita, which first motivated me to join AFSP’s effort and mission. At the time, in 2004, her loss seemed so unfathomable. In some ways, it still does – but I’ve since gained understanding and received support to heal from that loss, which will always be with me.

I knew then that there was nothing quite like AFSP’s organizational structure: a blend of scientific research and grassroots work was the perfect approach to prevent more lives lost to suicide. While it was Rita’s loss that first brought me to AFSP, it was worry over a family member and the realization that so many people experience mental health challenges and suicidal thoughts that has kept me involved.

Although it’s been 20 years since joining AFSP as a volunteer, the organization’s unique evolution has continued its focus on translating research to communities across the U.S. AFSP brings life-saving programs to people where they are, from education to loss support and more, through its national network of local chapters. Combined with strong advocacy for public health policies that promote equity and parity in the healthcare space and other impactful legislation, as well as its efforts in creating a culture that’s smart about mental health, I know AFSP is truly making a difference.”
